Joe and I have been having some conversations lately concerning the Twilight series. This conversation was prompted by a comment and ensuing conversation with a teenage guy that I was talking with. The comment that was made was, “There is so much pressure… if I ever kiss a girl I feel that the moment has to be perfect and I have to say just the right things… that’s impossible.” The conversation that followed was concerning the influence of the twilight series on teenagers and teenage romance.
Recently I was talking to another teenager concerning this same topic. He directed me to a Youtube video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K4uuGvmAxTI) that was filled with satire (of course I appreciated this) and at the same token was very thought provoking. Although this Youtube video is very funny it is also very serious at the same time. It is my opinion that the Twilight series is having a profound impact on adolescents today.
What I have found to be interesting is the impact that this series is having on both teenage boys and girls alike. Here are some of my observations.
1. It is my observation that Twilight promotes the idea that teenage girls are to act solely on their emotions and that logical thought process is illogical.
2. That “love” (whatever that is in this series) is irrational and illogical.
3. Girls cannot or do not posses the capacity to think rationally when emotions are involved.
4. Finally, I believe that it promotes that girls look for some type of “superman/super-human” guy to fall in love with. The “normal” or “real” guys are boring.
These ideas make the already difficult task of being a teenage girl even more difficult.
What I am not saying. I am not saying that this is the only movie or media outlet that is giving off a negative message to young women. I am not saying that all issues with teenage girls are because of Twilight. There are certainly other avenues that are damaging girls; such as poor parenting.
Part two: Impact on boys is coming soon!
